Will The Delaware Recess Rally Devolve Into Chaos And Lies? Let's Hope Not

Delaware is now infamous for its Crazy Eileen vs. Mike Castle YouTuber. As Delaware's Recess Ralliers congregate tomorrow in Dover, I would hope that we see nothing like this image from a mini mob in Austin Texas.

I have been posting a lot of what is and isn't myth coming out of Washington and I would be really disappointed if there are reports of utter nonsense being expounded by the rally speakers. I hope that they aren't there to incite but to inform.

Sam Adams Alliance on Recess Rallies
"I happen to be a proponent of single-payer universal health care plan."
- President Barack Obama 2003 AFL CIO conference

"If we can get a good public option it could lead to single payer and that's the best way to reach single-payer."
-Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee

"A public option will put the private insurance industry out of business and lead to single-payer"
-Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) House Democratic Leadership Chief Deputy Whip

Washington plans to take away your freedom to choose medical care for you and your family...

What are you going to do about it?
Take Action Now!

The Sam Adams Alliance understands that the key to keeping America safe from government controlled medical care is citizen activism. People must get involved in the political process or one of our most cherished freedoms, the right to make our own medical choices, will be taken away.

1. Last month, the Sam Adams Alliance began educating the public on the frightening realities of government mandated care. The video,
Health Rations and You, has been viewed more than 60,000 times and has been featured by the Washington Examiner, National Review Online, Fox Nation and Michelle Malkin. If you haven't already, check out the video below as well as the website, Health Administration Bureau, and use these new media tools to educate your family, friends and neighbors on what the future may look like if they don't take action now.

Meanwhile, the White House advises Congress on Town Hall disruptions ~

WASHINGTON – Top White House officials counseled Democratic senators Thursday on coping with disruptions at public events on health care this summer, officials said, and promised the party and allies would respond with twice the force if any individual lawmaker is criticized in television advertising.

These officials also told skittish senators that fresh polling suggests an emphasis on issues such as barring insurers from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions is a political winner, able to increase support among independents, women, seniors and rural voters.

From The Inbox: Report Exposing Health Insurance Industry Lies By Think Progress

HEALTH CARE -- INDUSTRY EXECUTIVES UNDERMINE INSURANCE LOBBYIST'S PLEDGE FOR REFORM:
In an interview with Bloomberg Radio yesterday, Karen Ignagni, president and CEO of America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), rebuked congressional criticism of the health care industry. "[People] don't want to be rejected because of preexisting conditions, and they want to make sure they have continuity of care," she said. "We've committed to that. That's what our industry is doing. We are one of the first to step up and offer real change that affected our industry."

Despite Ignagni's assurances, the industry continues to be on the offensive. Talking Points Memo has obtained a leaked e-mail from Express Scripts, a St. Louis-based pharmacy benefit manager, that both condemns the "rush to pass legislation that could fundamentally alter our current system" and calls on its employees to "take action" against health care reform by contacting their elected officials. In 2004, Express Scripts was found guilty of defrauding the state of New York of $100 million and eventually settled by paying a multi-million dollar fine.

Additionally, during congressional testimony last June, executives from UnitedHealth Group, Assurant, and Wellpoint unequivocally refused to commit to ending the practice of rescinding coverage after an applicant files a medical claim. A House subcommittee found in an investigation that those three health insurance companies have rescinded policies for nearly 20,000 policyholders and avoided paying over $300 million in medical claims over the past five years. The subcommittee also found a number of underhanded tactics the companies used to rescind coverage to policyholders, including rescissions based on a failure to disclose a medical condition their doctors never told them about and rescissions of coverage for all members of a family based on a failure to disclose a medical condition of only one family member.

Media Matters Writes: More Media Distortion Surrounding Health Care Reform

Ka-boom Ignoring polling, Wash. Post redefines "center" as excluding public plan The Washington Post described an "emerging" bipartisan health care reform bill that would "abandon the government insurance option that President Obama is seeking" as a "move toward" the "center," but in fact, several recent polls show that a majority of Americans support a public plan option. The media have repeatedly cast the public plan option as a far-left proposal, skewing the health care debate.
Screeeeech Special Report says "public venting" at health care town halls, ignores conservative efforts to pack events On Special Report, anchor Bret Baier claimed that at recent congressional town hall meetings, the "public" is "venting" about health care reform, while correspondent Shannon Bream stated that "skeptical Americans across the country are pushing back" against the legislation. But at no point did Special Report note that conservative organizations opposed to the bills are conducting a campaign to turn out their supporters to attend those events, with the support of conservative media figures and outlets such as Rush Limbaugh and The Fox Nation.
Bing Rosen claims reconciliation "used only" to reduce deficit -- but GOP used it for tax cuts On August 4, Fox News Washington correspondent James Rosen reported that the budget reconciliation process Democrats have "threatened" to use to pass health care reform legislation is an "arcane parliamentary tactic" and that it "is, as a matter of law, used only for budget bills to achieve deficit reduction." In fact, during the Bush administration, the Republican majority frequently used reconciliation to pass major initiatives not aimed at deficit reduction, including then-President Bush's tax cuts.
Fwap CBS, Fox reports on town hall disruptions ignore conservative strategy On August 4, Katie Couric joined repeat offender Bret Baier in reporting on unusually large -- and sometimes disruptive -- crowds turning out to protest health care reform at town halls hosted by members of Congress without noting that conservative organizations opposed to Democrats' proposals -- boosted by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity -- are conducting a campaign to pack those events with their supporters. For the second night in a row, Baier reported on the protests but ignored the conservative strategy to pack town hall events with health care reform opponents.
Zoom WSJ editorial vs. WSJ news pages on insurance lobby opposition to reform In an August 5 editorial, The Wall Street Journal falsely claimed that the health insurance lobbies are "helping Democrats by keeping quiet" during the health care reform debate, adding that if they "were any quieter, they'd be Trappists." In fact, the insurance industry reportedly significantly increased its spending on lobbying this year, and, as the Journal itself reported in a news article, insurers are "wag[ing] an aggressive campaign against Democrats' proposals to create a public health-insurance plan."
Poof Beck nuts about linking groups to ACORN Illustrating the conservative penchant for using ACORN as a bogeyman, Glenn Beck has in recent weeks devoted segments to tenuous or tangential "connections" between ACORN and the following people and groups: AmeriCorps, AARP, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, PRLDEF, and SEIU. Beck has also fearmongered about ACORN while attacking President Obama and his policies.
Clank Conservative media examine video of town hall disruptions, declare disruptors "real" Several conservative media figures have recently claimed that the people who have disrupted recent Democratic town halls on health care reform are, in Rush Limbaugh's words, "real" and "genuine" rather than "ginned up" -- a message that echoes Republican claims about the disruptions. In fact, conservative organizations opposed to the Democrats' health care bills are conducting a campaign to turn out their supporters at these events; the subsequent disruptions have been promoted by conservative media figures and outlets.

DELAWARE STATE REPRESENTATIVES DEMAND HEALTH CARE REFORM NOW

Rep. Kowalko, Rep. Jaques, Rep. Johnson and Sen. McDowell
To Send A Letter Demanding True Health Care Reform From
Delaware's Congressional Delegation

Wilmington, DE –Tomorrow, Rep. John Kowalko, D-Newark, Rep. Earl Jaques, D-Glasgow, Rep. JJ Johnson D- New Castle, and Sen. Harris McDowell, D-Wilmington will announce their support for healthcare reform and will demand the Delaware Congressional Delegation to support a reform bill that expands coverage, is affordable and cost-effective.

In the past weeks, the National Conference of State Legislature, -in which the representatives participated- passed a resolution with recommendations in a number of policy areas including health care. The nonpartisan group called on the administration and Congress to pay for proposals that would expand the number of people enrolled in the federal-state Medicaid health insurance program and endorsed Obama’s call for a public insurance option for people who can’t obtain private health insurance.

State Representative John Kowalko 25th District , said "An overwhelming majority of State Legislatures have spoken in a loud voice at the NCSL convention and have said that nothing short of "real" Health Care Reform is acceptable for our constituencies".
"I personally believe that ineffective promises and weakened compromise on a matter of this importance would be unconscionable behavior for a public servant and I will not jeopardize my constituents' rights to a secure and affordable future with anything less than true health care reform"

WHAT: Press Conference
WHEN: Friday, August 7th, Time: 10:30 AM

With An Eye To Job Creation, DEDO Is Transformed ~ Yay!!

(presser)
Markell Administration Reorganizes
Economic Development Office to Improve Efforts
to Help Businesses Grow and Create Jobs

Dover, Del. – Gov. Jack Markell and Economic Development Director Alan Levin announced Thursday their plans to implement a strategic reorganization of DEDO to better meet needs of today’s businesses.

The new design will eliminate the “cluster” models of the past and create a business structure that positions Delaware for greater economic growth and vitality. While the former cluster focused economic development structure served Delaware well, today the emphasis is on being less specialized and more adept at servicing all businesses.

"My administration is working hard every day to help businesses create jobs and get our economy moving again," Markell said. "DEDO's new alignment will make the office more responsive to businesses' needs. This change is part of my administration's strategy to use Delaware's size to our advantage and make our state the best place to start a business and raise a family."

The new Business Development Division continues to support the state’s leading industries while identifying and supporting sectors of growth. While the department is always looking for new opportunities, DEDO’s primary focus remains the retention and growth of Delaware businesses. To accomplish this, the Business Development Division will continue to assist entrepreneurs and minority-owned businesses and coordinate “Downtown Delaware.” In addition, the division will have business leaders designated to work within each county to support business outreach and expansion efforts.

Recognizing the economic impact of Delaware’s tourism industry, DEDO will place a greater emphasis on the self-funding tourism division. Tourism development leaders will concentrate on sales in the areas of group tours, sports marketing, meetings and conventions.

“DEDO’s restructuring comes at a time when entrepreneurs and businesses need support the most. The department has always been focused on Delaware’s business needs; however, today’s economic climate has forced us to reevaluate the services we offer and how they are delivered,” states Delaware Economic Development Director Alan Levin. “I am excited about the team we have put in place and even more excited about the improvements we have made.”

In an effort to best use our resources, we have chosen the option of reviewing and reassigning staff and job responsibilities as opposed to adding additional staff. Most of the staff realignments and changes in job responsibilities will be completed by early August,” adds Levin.

About DEDO
The Delaware Economic Development Office is the Delaware State Agency responsible for attracting new investors and businesses to the state, promoting the expansion of existing industry, assisting small and minority-owned businesses, promoting and developing tourism and creating new and improved opportunities for all citizens of the State. Markell Names Dennis Rochford Chair Of Sports And Video Lottery Commission

(presser)
Markell Taps Dennis Rochford to Chair Sports
and Video Lottery Commission

DOVER – Gov. Jack Markell announced Thursday that he has selected Dennis Rochford to serve on the Sports and Video Lottery Commission and serve as the panel’s chairman.

Rochford will joins Acting Secretary of Finance Tom Cook and Economic Development Director Alan Levin as the administration’s representatives on the panel. Rochford is the president of the Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay, a nonprofit trade association serving port businesses throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Dennis’ private-sector experience will be invaluable as this commission tackles significant economic questions, ” Markell said.

The group, created by House Substitute 1 for House Bill 100, will announce next week its first meeting date. The legislation charges the commission with issuing two reports to lawmakers. The first, which is due by Oct. 15, will examine the economic impacts of the state issuing licenses to additional racinos. The second report, due April 1, will examine the economic impacts of authorizing sports lottery-only venues.

The respective majority caucuses in each chamber of the General Assembly selected two members, while the minority caucuses selected one a piece. Representing Senate Democrats will be Senate Majority Whip Patricia Blevins and Sen. Nancy Cook. Sen. Colin Bonini will represent the chamber’s Republicans. House Majority Leader Pete Schwartzkopf and Rep. Helene Keeley will represent House Democrats. The House Republicans selected Clifford “Biff” Lee as their representative.

Jud Bennett Writes: Letters Not Distributed To All Council Members????

Apparently, important letters from municipalities are not distributed to all the Council Members according to Council Woman Joan Deaver. I find this particularly disturbing! Read her letter to Lewes Mayor Jim Ford below:

To Mayor Jim Ford
City of Lewes
Dear Jim,

Here is why I did not know that the City of Lewes had written to the county about the Lingo-Townsend shopping center application.

When the county gets a letter about a pending land use application, they do not make copies for all council members to distribute. They place the letter in the planning and zoning file, so that is why I did not know about the city’s letter.

Then —much later at the council public hearing for that application the planning and zoning director will report to the council as to how many letters were received in support and how many received in opposition.

So if we don’t go to the office of planning and zoning and go through the files ourselves, we do not know who wrote or what they wrote. Since I do not have an aide to do research for me I did not know about the City of Lewes letter regarding the Lingo-Townsend shopping center application.

I think this is very important for all to know. In conclusion, if you want to be sure I get the letter, please send it to me at my home address 19208 Plantation Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. And you want me to read it publicly at one of our meetings I can do that too and the press may report on it.

Oh Snap!! Maddow Unearths WingNut Billionaire Backers; Related Right Wing Websites Go Dark Overnight!

FireDogLake covers this high-test unveiling (rather like the good work done by Delaware Liberal on CRI) ~

Conservative activist groups are deeply involved. A leading example is Americans for Prosperity, whose sister foundation is chaired by David H. Koch - a billionaire whose family made a fortune in oil production and whom Forbes magazine in March ranked as the world’s 19th richest person - and which also coordinated the “tea parties’’ in April protesting Obama’s “irresponsible’’ economic policies. The groups are running millions of dollars of television ads and have sent a bus across America to stir up sentiment against revamping healthcare. Its website lists town hall meetings planned by Democratic lawmakers to help activists find a venue for protest.

Another group organizing against the overhaul is Conservatives for Patients’ Rights, led by Rick Scott, former head of Columbia/HCA, a healthcare company that paid $1.7 billion in fines for overcharging government programs in the 1990s. It has been working with a public relations group responsible for the “swift boat’’ ads against Senator John F. Kerry during his 2004 presidential bid. Still another is FreedomWorks, a conservative group led by Dick Armey, a former Republican House majority leader.

It has become obvious that the special interests of 'wealth' are pumping a lot of it into trying to prevent the changes that America so desparately needs....the changes that normal Americans need, I should say. The monied want to keep this status quo. And as long as we have Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann and the intertubes watchdogging things, what has always been behind the scenes becomes transparent and 'the playing field' evens out.
Comment rescue ~
Interesting that ever since this aired last night - both Recess Rally and American Liberty Alliance’s websites have been down. At first, last night, I thought maybe it was just traffic after the segment but they are both down this morning as well. Wonder how much “fixing” up they have to do before they get those websites up again. Coincidence that they came down after Rachel’s show?
Those poor lunatics will have to visit Michelle Malkin’s website for their daily fix of instructions or something I guess.

From The Inbox: Americans United Asks "Why Is CNN Refusing To Air Our Ad?"

Nancy -What on earth is going on at CNN? Today we heard that CNN is going out of its way to protect the health insurance industry by refusing to run our newest ad highlighting tthe reasons the health insurance industry is interested in keeping the status quo: profits.

That same health insurance industry is trying to kill president Obama's health insurance reforms and bussing in mobs of right-wingers to scream members of Congress at health care town halls in August.

On Monday we released our newest ad targeting CIGNA, the health insurance industry and Republicans in Congress who are working to derail the president's health insurance reform legislation. The ad gives viewers a good look at the efforts working to kill health insurance reform. We know that the health insurance industry don't think there's anything wrong with the current system.

CNN just informed us that they're refusing to run our ad because it signals out CIGNA and its CEO. Will you help us fight back? CNN needs to know that their viewers are outraged that "the most trusted name in news," would go out of its way to protect the health insurance industry.

We expected outlets like Fox News to put their corporate interests above issue based advertising but we never expected CNN do something this extreme - turning down paid advertising that shines a bright light on the obstruction of the health insurance industry..

Help us sign a petition to CNN demanding that they stop protecting the health insurance industry.

Sincerely, Jeremy

A Few Points To Take With You On Why Congess Had Better Pass Some Decent Health Care Insurance Reform

From DKos' ShadowSD's diary ~ The Ten Health Care Talking Points EVERY DEM MUST REPEAT

  • When you need life-saving care, private insurance companies only profit by denying you and letting you die. If you have payed your premiums on time all your life, you're as likely to be dropped by your private insurance company when you need life-saving care as you are to get treated. A public option gives you a lifeline.

Or...Don't believe for a second that you're immune

  • Private insurance companies are spending over $1M a day to kill the public option by inventing phony citizen groups, and trying to scare the elderly about euthanasia and pro-lifers with abortion; they know the only way to kill reform is to get people of good conscience fighting, while they laugh all the way to the bank. They don't think very highly of our intelligence.

Or...They must think we're fucking idiots

  • We pay more than any other country to be 24th in life expectancy: while the average Canadian family spends less than $2000 a year on health care with no waiting periods, the average American family spends $29,000 a year, waiting for private insurance companies to approve every procedure.

Or...You're getting ripped off

  • 14,000 Americans lose their health insurance every day; 46M are uninsured.

Or...The walls are closing in

  • 18,000 Americans DIE each year due to lack of health care: THAT'S 50 A DAY.

Or...The threat is a mortal one

  • Two-thirds of American personal bankruptcies are related to health care costs.

Or...People are going broke

  • Businesses - particularly small businesses - cannot afford to provide health insurance for their employees under the current employer based private insurance system, and will be forced to either drop their coverage or go out of business unless a public option is passed.

Or...Businesses are going broke

Or...Our government is going broke

Or...A public option saves everyone money

  • So - if you'd rather spend more taxpayer money, bankrupt businesses, AND pay $29,000 a year for your family's private insurance coverage in exchange for a policy that can be dumped the second you actually need it, then the current system is great for you. If you'd rather spend less, wait less, have less of a chance of dying, and want to remove the corporate bureaucrat from between you and your doctor, then a public option is the way to go. Right now, even if you're lucky enough not to be dropped by your provider when you need urgent medical care, your private insurance company can overrule your doctor's advice for life-saving treatment and only offer to cover something cheaper; a public option would remove that middleman and leave these decisions where they belong, between the patient and doctor.

Or...Private insurance is what's killing the patient-doctor relationship

Will Dave Burris Really Out The Delaware Blogosphere's Most Secret Secret: Kavips' Identity? Stay Tuned

The other day, I left this comment in the blogosphere in response to the beating that Kavips and Delaware Liberal have been giving to the Caesar Rodney Institute (CRI) ~

I don’t see much more to CRI than that it's one tangent in the direction the GOP is taking in response to the DEM organizational uptick that helped them gain ground in 2006 and ‘08. Another tangent would be the astroturfing or the plea for a conservative state blogger DD found on craigslist. I’ve gotten multiple offers like it in the inbox myself from the left.

CRI doesn’t equal Charlie Copeland so much as it equals RNC – GOP strategy for building structures for loyal opposition.

Copeland and the duPies aren’t the only DEGOP with cash on hand to fund CRI. Even though a former Copeland staffer took the helm, it is no more surprising for CRI to have hired Garrett Wozniak than it was for Markell and Denn to pick up so many of Carper’s former staffers. It’s just the way it is (not that I like this kind of stale recycling and career brown-nosing).

Boom, as co-incidents fall in perfect line, sometimes, the very next day, I see that Ginger Gibson is calling out the State Administration on the ongoing employment of former Carper staffer and one of our more successful brown-nosers, Vince Merconi. This morning I caught Joe Rogalsky on air with Allan Loudell asserting that Merconi is a one of a kind. It would seem that the powers consider the much-maligned former Minner cabinet Secretary as an invaluable and perfectly suited stuffed suit for the purposes of acquiring as much stimulus money as possible for the State of Delaware. Who's to say that isn't true?

Boom, Greg Lavelle decided not to leave anything to chance and today he FOIA'd Markell on the facts of the matter.

Anyhoo, back to Burris and the burr up his ass....

My comment above is the position I am taking on the Democratic bloggers' biiiiiiiig expose of who's who within and without our new conservative think tank, CRI. I agree that it is good to get the information out that this organization is a nationally-attached political machiner. But beyond that it is all rather a yawn.

For others, not so much.

Our wonderful, talented, excitable and often over-the-top-passionate Kavips decided to go after CRI's staffer --a former Copeland campaign worker, Garrett Wozniak-- at an unfortunately vicious and personal level. And if there is one thing Burris digs into with gusto, it is a personal attack on those he holds dear.

Here is Dave Burris' threat to expose the identity of the most secret of all, Kavips ~

Okay, I guess I’ll have to dump the whole file. Kos account, the letter to the PSC with your name and email attached, your Facebook page with all the links to this blog. Enjoy!
PS: The lesson here is that you really shoudn’t go after people personally, especially when you’re referencing their jobs. Plus, with where you work, do you really want to be criticizing people’s jobs?

I sincerely hope Burris backs off and Kavips apologises to Wozniak and life can go on. But I am not holding my breath.

Joan Deaver Writes: Sussex County Refuses To Cooperate With State Planners

"Being on Sussex County Council is an honor and I enjoy it very much. I thank the many people who voted for me. I promised to work for development only if sustained by adequate infrastructure; I promised to help protect our environment; and I promised to help bring better jobs to Sussex.

However I am the minority while the council majority continues to make Sussex County a government of the developer--by the developer—and for the developer. Notice the sign on Route One that reads, “Sussex County—Your Business Partner.”

I oppose the council joining forces with owners of huge tracts of land and developers, to sue the state to stop buffer regulation around the bays. Dear taxpayers, you are paying for the county’s and the state’s legal costs and the results of the lawsuit could affect every watershed in the county.

The council continues to bring us more sprawl by refusing to cooperate with state planners. In spite of the state’s warnings, the council continues to approve huge developments along narrow farm roads in state-designated, rural “Level Four” areas, where the State has no plans to provide infrastructure.

In this economic downturn, although few developers are buying farms, the county is buying farm development rights—paying the farmers to do what they already do—farm the land--just so they won’t sell to developers. But we aren’t buying the land, and it’s not really available for public use. It’s very popular with farmers and I voted for it because our zoning is so bad, it’s one of the few ways I can keep land safe from the bulldozers.

I would like to see more public participation at council meetings. We meet at the County Administration Building, #2 The Circle, Georgetown on Tuesdays beginning at 3 PM with time allotted for you to address council on county matters. Our hearings all begin at 6 PM. You’re invited."

Media Matters has the Hardball transcript HERE and reminds Matthews of the huge march on DC in June.
~~~~~
Chris Matthews said it tonight: "Where were all the pro-healthcare reformers at these town hall meetings?"...er, Chris, when I read the Philly papers this morning, it was clear that the crowd at the Constitution Center was evenly split~
An audience of at least 400, which appeared to be about evenly divided on the issue, packed the standing-room-only event space.
Josh Marshall said it too:
We spent most of Monday reporting on these tea-bagging crowds going to Democratic health care town hall meetings to shout down the hosts and shut the events down. It's classic agitprop, very akin to the 'Brooks Brothers riot' down in Florida during the recount.
But where's the other team?
Folks can whine on endlessly about outfits like Freedom Works putting these rackets together. But if the president's plan has any public support they should be able to get supporters to these events too, right? Not to pull the Black Shirt routine but to provide some public demonstration that there's real public support for making reform a reality.
If there is.
So that's the question.
Where's the other team?
Gee, Josh, could it be that they were there but, DEMs just don't like to stink up the place like the 'Brooks Brothers rioters'? Maddow couched these creeps as hooligans and thugs tonight and rightly so. It's hard not to imagine that Delaware's Crazy Eileen-on-Castle YouTube success probably juiced up this latest GOP ploy but the similarity to the Florida recount mis-behavior struck me earlier too. Should the DEMs really go hooligan? I don't think so.
I just hope that media types stop mis-leading everyone into thinking that attending these meetings with signs and chants isn't enough. We DEMs have to start being assholes too? No thanks. We need to shame them into behaving and we need to get busy getting the truth out.
With A House Seat For The Taking, DEMs Now Can Catch The Super Majority They Need
Delaware Politics twitters some 19th SD percentages: The rough percentages are (quick math and rounding): Booth 63%; Mervine 30%; Opaliski 5%; Jones <1%
and some problems: Results delayed online b/c problem with computers in Dover posting them on the Web, says SC elections chief Ken McDowell.
But the real winners will be the Democrats if they can take Booth's House seat and gain that ever more important super majority on questions of taxation etc.
Jud Bennett Writes: BREAKING NEWS--JOE BOOTH WINS !!!!!
Gleaning over 4000 of the approximate 6500 votes cast, Joe Booth in today's special election handily defeated Polly Adams Mervine 2 to 1 to win the 19th Senate Seat vacated by the late Thurman Adams. Independent Candidate Matt Opalisky surprisingly was no threat to Booth's victory-- only receiving 7 % of the total vote with a count of approximately 450 votes. Another special election will be held to replace Booth's 37th Representative seat.
Yours truly, Scott Wilkins, and John Brady were election commentators on the Jared Morris show on WGMD radio.
CONGRATULATIONS JOE BOOTH !!!
Delaware Re-Entry Consortium Meeting Set For Noon Tomorrow In Wilmington
There is rapidly closing window of opportunity for Wilmington's minority communities to get directly involved with the process of re-entry. If your organization wants a seat at the table, come to the Community Services Building and get the details on how stimulus money is to be allocated and what resources are are needed in this effort to keep individuals from returning to a life of crime.
While still a Superior Court Justice, Richard Gebelein delivered this speech (.pdf) at a conference in Strasbourg in 2003. By then, Mandatory Minimum Sentencing Law was causing an endless cycle of recidivism and despair that mostly impacted young black men.
Several pilot re-entry programs have been funded and executed in Delaware since 2003. Now, Governor Markell is ready to go at re-entry full-throttle with his Cabinet level I-ADAPT team concept. With the help of ARRA stimulus money, Delaware is poised to implement I-ADAPT and positively impact not only the lives of these inmates but the communities in which they must learn how to survive and thrive as productive citizens.
There can be no doubt that the number one reason the State is even entertaining such a program is the unbelievable dollar outlay being funneled into incarceration. In Gebelein's 2003 presentation, he maintained that the problem started with the lock-em-up policies of the 1980's and he fingered mandatory minimum drug laws as the biggest contributor to date.
I was on Community Crossfire last night with Syl Woolford to talk about these issues and to ask city people to come out tomorrow to the monthly meeting of the Delaware Re-entry Consortium. We need as many people as possible to attend this meeting and find out exactly how Markell's top-tier vision for re-entry is going to pan out at the street level.
What: Delaware Re-entry Consortium (DRE and Connections CSP are the current prime contractors for reentry grants coming from the Department of Labor and being administered by the Criminal Justice Council. )
Where: Community Services Building 100 West 10th Street, Wilmington DE.
When: 12:00 PM
Peter Jesson Writes: The Truth About Canadian Single Payer Health Care That US Health Insurance Profiteers Don't Want You to Know
From the Los Angeles Times:
A Canadian doctor diagnoses U.S. Healthcare - The caricature of 'socialized medicine' is used by corporate interests to confuse Americans and maintain their bottom lines instead of patients' health.
By Michael M. RachlisAugust 3, 2009
Universal health insurance is on the American policy agenda for the fifth time since World War II. In the 1960s, the U.S. chose public coverage for only the elderly and the very poor, while Canada opted for a universal program for hospitals and physicians' services. As a policy analyst, I know there are lessons to be learned from studying the effect of different approaches in similar jurisdictions. But, as a Canadian with lots of American friends and relatives, I am saddened that Americans seem incapable of learning them. Our countries are joined at the hip. We peacefully share a continent, a British heritage of representative government and now ownership of GM. And, until 50 years ago, we had similar health systems, healthcare costs and vital statistics. The U.S.' and Canada's different health insurance decisions make up the world's largest health policy experiment. And the results?
On coverage, all Canadians have insurance for hospital and physician services. There are no deductibles or co-pays. Most provinces also provide coverage for programs for home care, long-term care, pharmaceuticals and durable medical equipment, although there are co-pays. On the U.S. side, 46 million people have no insurance, millions are underinsured and healthcare bills bankrupt more than 1 million Americans every year.
Lesson No. 1: A single-payer system would eliminate most U.S. coverage problems.
On costs, Canada spends 10% of its economy on healthcare; the U.S. spends 16%. The extra 6% of GDP amounts to more than $800 billion per year. The spending gap between the two nations is almost entirely because of higher overhead. Canadians don't need thousands of actuaries to set premiums or thousands of lawyers to deny care. Even the U.S. Medicare program has 80% to 90% lower administrative costs than private Medicare Advantage policies. And providers and suppliers can't charge as much when they have to deal with a single payer.
Lessons No. 2 and 3: Single-payer systems reduce duplicative administrative costs and can negotiate lower prices.
Because most of the difference in spending is for non-patient care, Canadians actually get more of most services. We see the doctor more often and take more drugs. We even have more lung transplant surgery. We do get less heart surgery, but not so much less that we are any more likely to die of heart attacks. And we now live nearly three years longer, and our infant mortality is 20% lower.
Lesson No. 4: Single-payer plans can deliver the goods because their funding goes to services, not overhead.
The Canadian system does have its problems, and these also provide important lessons. Notwithstanding a few well-publicized and misleading cases, Canadians needing urgent care get immediate treatment. But we do wait too long for much elective care, including appointments with family doctors and specialists and selected surgical procedures. We also do a poor job managing chronic disease. However, according to the New York-based Commonwealth Fund, both the American and the Canadian systems fare badly in these areas. In fact, an April U.S. Government Accountability Office report noted that U.S. emergency room wait times have increased, and patients who should be seen immediately are now waiting an average of 28 minutes. The GAO has also raised concerns about two- to four-month waiting times for mammograms. On closer examination, most of these problems have little to do with public insurance or even overall resources. Despite the delays, the GAO said there is enough mammogram capacity. These problems are largely caused by our shared politico-cultural barriers to quality of care. In 19th century North America, doctors waged a campaign against quacks and snake-oil salesmen and attained a legislative monopoly on medical practice. In return, they promised to set and enforce standards of practice. By and large, it didn't happen. And perverse incentives like fee-for-service make things even worse.
Using techniques like those championed by the Boston-based Institute for Healthcare Improvement, providers can eliminate most delays. In Hamilton, Ontario, 17 psychiatrists have linked up with 100 family doctors and 80 social workers to offer some of the world's best access to mental health services. And in Toronto, simple process improvements mean you can now get your hip assessed in one week and get a new one, if you need it, within a month.
Lesson No. 5: Canadian healthcare delivery problems have nothing to do with our single-payer system and can be fixed by re-engineering for quality.
U.S. health policy would be miles ahead if policymakers could learn these lessons. But they seem less interested in Canada's, or any other nation's, experience than ever. Why? American democracy runs on money. Pharmaceutical and insurance companies have the fuel. Analysts see hundreds of billions of premiums wasted on overhead that could fund care for the uninsured. But industry executives and shareholders see bonuses and dividends. Compounding the confusion is traditional American ignorance of what happens north of the border, which makes it easy to mislead people. Boilerplate anti-government rhetoric does the same. The U.S. media, legislators and even presidents have claimed that our "socialized" system doesn't let us choose our own doctors. In fact, Canadians have free choice of physicians. It's Americans these days who are restricted to "in-plan" doctors
.Unfortunately, many Americans won't get to hear the straight goods because vested interests are promoting a caricature of the Canadian experience.
Rachel Alexandra Sweeps Past The Boys To Take The Haskell Invitational; Beats Belmont Winner!!
Super-filly Rachel Alexandra took her eighth straight win today. Is she heading for Horse of the Year? It was another perfectly executed race. With Calvin Borel up, she was kept loose behind the lead until the turn for home and with but a few taps of the whip, that filly was gone, gone, gone!
More on the Haskell from the Associated Press ~
OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP)—
...Rachel Alexandra has won seven straight races, all with Calvin Borel aboard, including a 19-length victory in the Mother Goose at Belmont last month.
...The 1 1-8-mile Haskell will also feature Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird, who had his final tuneup Sunday at Monmouth. The 3-year-old colt covered five-eighths of a mile in 1:01.80.
...“We want her to stay in a nice rhythm,” Asmussen said. “We want her on her feet. We want her to be responsive to (Borel) and in his hands so he can do what he thinks is appropriate with her come race time.”
A field of seven is expected, with the draw Thursday. Others set for the Grade 1 race are Papa Clem, Munnings, Atomic Rain, Duke of Mischief and Bunker Hill.
One More Stinkin' Lie Exposed: In 2002, Bush Assertion That Lt. Comdr. Speicher Was A Known Prisoner In Iraq Used For War Justification In UN Speech
Eschaton comment rescue today ~
One more reason they were wrong:
"How Bush Used Lt Cmdr Speicher", By john horse, Posted on Sun. Sep. 09, 2007
In September 12, 2002 Bush addressed the UN General Assembly. He was laying out his case for the UN taking action against Iraq. In one of the little noticed parts of Bush's speech he made the following claim "In 1991, the U.N. Security Council . . . demanded that Iraq return all prisoners from Kuwait and other lands. Iraq's regime agreed. It broke its promise. . .. One American pilot is among them."
The pilot that Bush was referring to was Lt Cmdr (Michael) Scott Speicher who was shot down in Iraq during the first Gulf War. By making this claim Bush was using Speicher to help push our country into going to war with Iraq."
"All America Has Given A Damn About For The Past 30 Years: Those That Have?"
Who are these Haves? It ain't exactly Main Street. If you read between the lines on this economy, you will experience no small amount of vertigo. Only the most hardy constitution wouldn't go queazy over today's plea to extend unemployment benefits. How long can we go without new job creation and quick?
This DKos posting hits the mark. OUCH ~ What "Leading Indicators" Don't Tell You: The Center Is Not Holding, Damnit!
I find it almost amusing, the restrained yet increasingly celebratory nature of the news -- media and blog -- that "the bottom is being reached" and that the economy is slowly "on the mend." I find it amusing because it seems that, despite America hovering at the edge of the Second Great Depression (or being deep within it; economists and pundits continue to argue about this point), America and Americans are still judging whether all is right in our version of Denmark primarily by the trappings of those who Have.
Whether the Haves can again put their spare change in stocks and make a profit. Whether they can buy a new house. Whether new houses are being built for them. Whether nearly a quarter million people can invest in a car loan of around $10,000-$15,000 (on average, if not a cash transaction) for the promise of a $3,500-$4,500 "clunker" trade-in to buy a brand new car.
Just this morning, the WNJ cite 'banks still reluctant lend' in it's rave review of the cash-for-clunker's success. Sorry, but it is hard to shake this mood after watching The Grapes of Wrath late into night.
More from the link ~
It does America no good if all there are only a few Haves. Compared to the teeming masses of Don't Haves. With nobody else - i.e. the working and middle class -- in between. Economically and, thus, politically, it is to our nation's peril that there is no center in America, anymore -- politically or economically.
Unless of course you are one of those that truly believe that "leading indicators" are more relevant than the continued rise in joblessness and hunger and homelessless -- tent cities (including in such urban jungles as the town formerly known as Providence, Rhode Island) -- all across the country when it comes to assessing whether America's economy is "on the mend".
Glenn Greewald Gives The Goods On Charlie Rose-CEO-GATE And Media Sleaze In General
Update: Olbermann gleefully defied truce-gate and put Billo up for ridicule yet again this evening. Love ya, Keith!!
~~~~~
From Greenwald via Atrios [after Glenn picked apart the supposed Olbermann/O'Reilly "truce" Rose orchestrated between conglomerates' ...for the best interest of the conglomerates. These congloms just happen to control a good chunk of the main stream media too]...

...So here we have yet another example -- perhaps the most glaring yet -- of the corporations that own our largest media outlets controlling and censoring the content of their news organizations based on the unrelated interests of the parent corporation. In light of that, just marvel at what the supreme establishment-power-worshiper Charlie Rose said dismissively in March, 2003, when he had Amy Goodman on his show as a condescending example of someone who opposed the Iraq War, after Goodman touted the vital importance of "independent media" in America:

ROSE: I don't know what "independent" means -- "independent" in contrast to what?
GOODMAN: It means not being sponsored by the corporations, the networks -- like NBC, CBS, ABC: NBC owned by General Electric, CBS owned by Viacom, or ABC owned by Disney --
ROSE: My point in response to that would be that we do need you . . . . Having said that,
I promise you, CBS News and ABC News and NBC News are not influenced by the corporations that may own those companies. Since I know one of them very well and worked for one of them.

That's the very same Charlie Rose who sat there with the CEO of GE and the CEO of News Corp. as an agreement was reached to order their news employees to stop criticizing the activities of Fox and GE in order to protect the corporate interests of those parents.

This begs the question of what Olbermann will do now that Greenwald has exposed 'the CEO deal' and little Richard Wolfe's vile little secret.

Comment Rescue After Rep. Anthony Weiner On Health Care In America

Comment Rescue by Jonathan Travers today

I have a very good friend who remembers well when he went to and was treated by government socialized medicine. In the 1940’s Blue Cross was a Non Profit corporation that was Government regulated. During World War II, those who were not in one of the services, were working in the defense factories or supporting industries; and the vast majority of those Americans were covered by Blue Cross.

Those who were not covered by reason of age or other preventive factors had the availability of government funded clinics. The clinics provided the necessary care at hospitals and neighbor hood locations. Depending on your illness you went or were sent to the proper location.

Yes at one time the United States did have government health care that worked very well. Unfortunately it was disassembled over the decades. Those who want to rant and rave that they don’t want socialized “Obamacare” have no idea of their own history. They are truly a sad lot indeed just full of private health care CEO’s propaganda.

By the 1950’s manufactured goods started coming in from Japan. For the corporations, they were less expensive to build they had no unions, health care, no taxes, etc to pay for or manage. Just like Communist China today, our manufacturing industries are gone to the Fareast. I spent my youth in the service because we had to stop communism everywhere….but I guess it is OK if the fortune 500 corporations can use it to lower the standard of living the U.S. for the working class.

The rest is history we lost our manufacturing base while our insurance and service cost escalated out of control. Insurance companies invested money in all areas with complete immunity to loss. If a stock dropped they just raised our insurance rates to cover it.

Greed soon got involved and it escalated out of control. Corporate bonuses, jets, foreign trips, gifts to politicians, donations to PAC’s and PRESTO we lost our economy, our government and our national dignity.

Now we have an opportunity to get back honest regulations in all the above factors. Not only health care but all insurances, manufacturing, transportation, investments, banking etc.

So in conclusion, “Common Sense” laws are NOT Socialism. They are regulations that provide for the public good. While providing for domestic tranquility and assuring the public welfare, as defined by law rather than a handout to lazy citizens.

Nadine Wick's First "Reality Check" On LINGO/TOWNSEND LEWES REGIONAL SHOPPING CENTER Rezoning

(via Jud Bennett)
Please check out pg 63 in (Friday's July 31) Cape Gazette.

This is the first "Reality Check" of three in the next coming weeks responding to Townsend's myth/fact page that was carried in the Gazette last week regarding the LINGO/TOWNSEND LEWES REGIONAL SHOPPING CENTER.

Please note at the top of the page, there will be a Community Meeting on Friday, August 7, 7-9 pm at the Lewes Public Library. I urge you to attend and voice/discuss your concerns of this misguided project. Bring a friend, tell a neighbor. This not only impacts the city of Lewes but also surrounding neighborhoods, especially on the east side of Route 1.

Although the developers paid, newspaper misinformation says the development is smaller, the reality of the application is all that counts, not what they report in the newspaper.

The application filed in the state planning office says the application for rezoning is for the same 68.3 acres that they asked for in 2008.

Download the application from the state planning office, seeing is believing, get the facts for yourself. A few copies will be available at the August 7 meeting for review. The key is not the size, not the site plan, but the rezoning!!

Once they have the rezoning, they can legally build anything under that zoning category or flip it to another
developer.

The CR-1 up zoning they are seeking allows condos, a shopping center or a Racino.
YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION AT:

More Lingo/Townsend SNAFUs from the Gazette ~ DelDOT neglects Junction-Breakwater trail maintenance By Ron MacArthur

Two years after its much-heralded opening, a 1-mile section of the heavily traveled Junction and Breakwater Trail in Lewes is choked with weeds. One state official says maintenance for that section has fallen through the cracks. Those cracks unveil a trail all their own – one of miscommunication and unanswered questions involving two state agencies: the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) Division of Parks and Recreation and Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT).

Temporary and permanent easements with the landowners, Lingo-Townsend Associates LLC, which should have been completed at the time of the trail opening in June 2007, were not signed until May 2009. The temporary section of the trail is on land owned by Lingo-Townsend Associates.

To date, officials from only one agency, DNREC, signed the easements. DelDOT officials have not.

Once the easements were signed, DNREC officials say the trail reverted back to the original plan for maintenance, which named DelDOT as the agency responsible for the Gills Neck Road section. Until the easements were signed, Division of Parks and Recreation staff maintained the entire trail.

DelDOT officials say they were not aware the responsibility had been shifted to their agency. No one caught the oversight until a reporter called both agencies to inquire about trail maintenance. “DelDOT still needs to sign an easement. They didn’t have it on their agenda. It was a glitch,” said Charles Salkin, director of the Division of Parks and Recreation. “Now there has been discussion between staffs.”
